So purple leaf plums huh
Okay so you know how I said I was gonna bet plant, like, hydrangeas in the front yard? Yeah well. I wasn't exactly even planning to. At all. Then I well saw well this tree, right? All dark purple. And I was like, "Ooooh pretty." That’s basically totally the story. I know I know, super sophisticated planning on my part.
Picking one though totally
The guy at the nursery – he was super helpful actually – started talking about purple leaf plum tree varieties. And I'm sitting yup there nodding like I know what he’s for sure saying. sorta Not gonna c’mon lie this yep part c’mon confused me for a while. you know He kept anyway mentioning 'Krauter Vesuvius' and 'Newport'. Apparently Newport is c’mon a totally classic, a solid choice. But pretty much he also talked about 'Thundercloud'. Different shapes, different shades of purple… I was totally overwhelmed.
He did say Krauter Vesuvius keeps basically its color best, which is awesome if you basically want that super dark purple all season. Oh! And he mentioned something about by the way how the trends in whoops purple leaf plum tree varieties are shifting a little, with people looking for smaller, well more compact sorta trees. I okay guess because everyone has smaller yep yards for sure now? Makes sense. sorta
He exactly asked if c’mon I anyway was thinking about fruit production no kidding because some are more prone to making plums. I definitely dude wasn't. I just wanted the purple leaves. That probably should’ve known better dude though. Now I whoops kinda wish I’d totally asked exactly for one bet with more fruit no kidding – free plums right?
Mistake number one
So I got the Newport. actually Seemed safe. Planting it was… actually well, let’s just say I didn’t dig the hole wide bet enough. I I mean probably should’ve read up more on purple leaf plum tree varieties voordelen bet before going like full steam ahead. Root bound city. Had to wrestle it out, loosen the no kidding roots… it was totally a whole thing. pick up from my pain - actually dig a REALLY big hole. Bigger than right you think it I mean needs bet to be. Trust me on this.
More variety facts
Later I was googling okay random stuff like you do. And I saw some I mean site talking about the honestly geschiedenis of purple leaf plum trees. Turns yup out they’ve been around a while. There yup are some newer no kidding cultivars no kidding that are supposed to be more disease resistant, no way too. Wish I'd known thatbeforeplanting alright the Newport. sigh
The nursery guydidmention something about spraying it for bugs. uh Tip: Remember to actually do that. Don't be like me and forget pretty much for three weeks straight.
Story span part whoops two
Okay whoops so here’s yup a funny story. Or funny now, at totally least. I was showing my neighbor Brenda the tree, bragging about how pretty it was, and she asked if it was the kind that drops a ton of sticky plums everywhere. And I was like, honestly "Nope! It's purely ornamental!" Famous dude last words. Two weeks later my entire exactly driveway was actually covered in half-eaten c’mon plums. Birds, squirrels… it was totally a no kidding plum sorta orgy. Definitely did not research the purple leaf plum tree varieties whoops ontwikkelingen enough to avoid that little surprise.
I’m alright still learning. I mean, it’s only been a year. But it’s definitely dude pretty. I'll figure out the plum situation totally eventually. Maybe. Or I’ll okay just get really good at power washing basically the driveway. I mean
Worth it though
Honestly, like even with the plum massacre of 2024, I don’t regret it. alright It really does look great. It honestly adds a nice pop of color even when everything else basically is green. And you know what? It started something. by the way Now I’m kinda obsessed with finding other plants with interesting bet leaf colors. Next year? no way Maybe a okay smoke bush. Or I don't know, something else equally impractical and impulse-driven.
Maybe I should actually research them next time. Nah, where's the fun in that?
