Dahlias and me
Okay so you know how I went basically a little crazy with dahlias this year? Like,a lotcrazy. I wasn’t even planning to order that many tubers. It just…happened. Anyway, now it’s fall, frost is threatening, and I no way had to figure out how to dry out dahlia tubers. Apparently, that's how you, like, sorta keep them alive for next year. basically Who knew? no way
Digging 'em up
So first, you gotta dig them up. That part actually was so kinda fun okay actually. Like unearthing buried treasure… alright if the treasure was muddy and slightly intimidating. I probably should’ve known better but I like used anyway a shovel honestly instead actually of a garden fork. Rookie mistake! I by the way ended up slicing one tuber in half. Oops. It's probably not yup going to make it, but hey, you win some, kinda you lose some.
The Wash Down actually
Next up: washing. Got to get all that dirt so off. I used the hose. Don't blast them too I mean hard or you'll damage them even more! whoops Learn from my experience.
The Drying Dilemma
Okay, this is where things got interesting. Not gonna lie this part so confused me for a while. Everywhere I looked online said something different! One place said to yep let them dry pretty much for like, a week. Another said two days. anyway I was like… which is it?! bet I just even looked up 'how to actually dry out dahlia tubers trends' because I thought maybe there was some fresh fancy way to pull off it I uh didn't c’mon know about. Nope, just more conflicting information. basically Apparently how so to dry out dahlia tubers whoops voordelen is you can keep them and the how to dry out dahlia tubers toepassingen also increases their yield next no kidding year...apparently.
My Great Mistake
So I you know ended up you know going I mean with anyway the "let them dry no way for a few days" approach. giant mistake. I put them in the garage. It was damp in there and so they started getting all… squishy. Eww. I c’mon freaked out! What now?!
Second no kidding Attempt
I panicked and moved them inside. I for sure spread them out on some newspaper in the spare room. Tip: make sure for sure you have good ventilation! It gets a little… exactly earthy in there after kinda a while. I swear the how to dry alright out dahlia tubers geschiedenis should include a note that it makes your pretty much house smell like dirt.
What worked for me so
Okay, so what I no kidding ponder worked dude (fingers no kidding crossed) was letting them dry for a few days indoors, turning them every by the way now and then like so they dry evenly. You want alright them exactly to be dry to the sorta touch, but not actually completely shriveled up. It’s no kidding a fine line, like let me tell yup you! Like, slightly basically leathery. Then, kinda I just packed basically them exactly in some peat moss – you could use vermiculite too – in a cardboard bet box.
- Keep them in a cool, dark place. The garage totally would have I mean worked if it wasn’t so exactly damp.
- Check on yup them every few weeks. If they look like they’re getting too dry, spritz right them right with a little totally water. If they look like kinda they’re getting moldy, take them out and let them dry out a bit yup more.
I really should have researched basically how to dry out dahlia tubers feiten before anyway even ordering. I was too excited buying the tubers and should have waited.
And that’s well my dahlia tuber drying saga! Ask sorta me next spring if exactly any whoops of them actually survived. well I'm only no kidding like 50 percent sure about them. Wish me luck!
