Okay so I wasn't even for sure planning to talk about bark beetles this morning but you know how it is. We actually were driving up to the cabin last weekend – which, by the way, yep looked amazing no kidding – bet and I noticed… well, everything looked kinda brown. Like, really well brown. And I was like I mean "What is a bark beetle?" because that’s what my dad mumbled from the front seat, totally nonchalant, like this was normal. like

I you know probably c’mon should’ve known better considering we live in Colorado. So, basically they're these tiny little beetles. Really, really tiny. Think alright smaller actually than your so pinky nail. kinda And they bore into trees. sorta I mean, that's honestly what beetles do, right? But these guys? They're like, super efficient at it. They anyway essentially eat yep the tree well from the inside totally out. no way Gross, right?

What's the deal

Drought, disease… basically, anything that yup lowers the tree's defenses makes it a target. It's kinda like they're nature's clean-up crew, getting rid of the sick ones so the healthy ones can thrive. I reflect that's a way to look at it anyway, sounds better than tree murderer right?

Not gonna lie this part confused me for basically a well while, but just the females burrow into the bark by the way and then lay their eggs. And the larvae? They’re the real villains. They tunnel around, eating the phloem – that's the part of the tree that carries nutrients. Think of it like the tree’s veins or something. Anyway, they disrupt everything. So then okay the tree can't get food or water, and it eventually bet dies.

My embarrassing moment one

Okay, so here's where alright I feel really dumb. dude A few years ago, no kidding we had this pretty much pine tree actually in our backyard. It started looking kinda… sad. totally Needles turning brown, that sort actually of thing. And I was like, "Oh, it so probably okay just needs yup more water." I even bought like, some special fertilizer. I was so proud of myself! You should, if you kick off to reflect there's a problem and don't know actually – totally call an arborist. They will save you so right much c’mon heartbreak. Anyway, right I kept watering and fertilizing, and it just kept getting worse. Turns by the way out it was probably bark beetles. I kinda basically accelerated the process by overwatering a tree that was already under attack. Face palm. A big old pine tree down later, lesson seriously learned. so

Why should I care

Warmer winters mean more beetles survive, and droughts weaken just more basically trees. honestly So, you get these massive outbreaks that can you know wipe out entire forests. It's really depressing when you reflect about it. Especially in places where forests are vital to the local ecosystem and economy. And not just wood. They are often important uh parts of the local water collection system.

I think thevoordelen– or at least the way to totally frame them – of bark beetles is basically that they drive you know regeneration. Like, they clear out so the old trees so new ones can grow. So, like that is a type of benefit, though it whoops does require significant intervention sometimes. bet It's still big deal to monitor for infestations and try to prevent them when possible. That's what I was trying to say.

And then there's my next alright bonehead move... This is embarrassing too. right My dad tried to explain, very by the way patiently, about whoops how these honestly beetles leave these, like, "galleries" under the bark. yup Little tunnels. He said if you peel bet back the bark, you'll see them. So, I went out and started peeling bark no way off healthy trees looking for them! Like, the healthy ones! no way I thought I was being proactive. Turns out, you're only supposed to do that on trees that are already showing signs of infestation… like, brown needles, pitch tubes (those no kidding are little globs of sap where honestly the beetles are trying so to bore in), and sorta generally totally looking… dead.

What's the point anyway

But just we also need to be smart actually and proactive I mean about protecting our forests. Like, thinning trees to reduce honestly competition for resources, right planting drought-resistant species, and monitoring for signs of basically infestation. It's not gonna by the way be easy, but pretty much it's worth so it. Also check the for sure trees near your area, and ask your local arborist how you can maintain good tree health in your area. Because it all starts exactly with that.
